I like this idea. How about suggesting it in p.general?

People could contribute new images there in a way similar to that one
site which collects images of spherical objects in a standard size.

Perhaps we could set up p.b.rsocp? ;-) I'm sure we'd get more posts that way.
It'd be like a POV-Ray-only CGSphere type thingy, but with more flexibility.
:-D

You realise that means everyone will have to re-submit their entry. Hmm!
Competition. :)

Maybe not necessarily a competition, but just a place to show off these
amazing creations?

I'm just being silly. Of course not a competition but a history and would be
glad to submit mine.

yes, let's get them all together. Not too long ago, someone came up with pretty
original take on the theme: a reflective/thoughtful sphere on a (flying)
checkered plane. That should be there! :D

I was just thinking of that one. The idea should be that it is a very
deliberately constrained theme, but people are free to interpret it in
any old bizarre way they want.

I'm working on something that could be made into an RSOCL entry, and
I'll be happy to contribute when I have something.

For what it's worth, the original is RSOCP for Reflective Sphere On
Checkered Plane. I called mine "RSOCL" because it's a checkered
landscape. :-)

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, everybody. I put this together as
kind of a throwaway image, so I'm impressed that people like it.

You know you've been raytracing too long when your family thinks you are
avoiding them.

I think you should call it RSOCP. After all, it is a Reflective Sphere On
Checkered Plain.
