Since this is my first post, I figured I had to take on the epic "Chrome 
Sphere on Checkered Plane" that begins all good POV-ing careers.  This 
particular version uses scattering media (type 4), focal blur, blurred 
reflection, and radiosity.  Needless to say, it took a long time to 
render (I'd hazard to guess it was around 20 hours for this resolution - 
I'd give more precise data, but the computer crashed sometime after it 
completed but before I got to access it again).

Because I'm impatient, some of the quality settings were inadequate.  I 
got rid of most of them with some simple GIMPing - despeckle tackled the 
persistent focal blur artifacts that kept occuring quite well, but the 
image isn't vanilla :(  Name and date were also added with the GIMP. 
Nothing else was changed.

To think it was done on a relatively new PC too (PD 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM).

This is one of the best RSOCP images I have seen in a while. I like the
camera angle and the tiles look really good. This is what raytracing was
made for..

Thanks!  I tried to work on the "composition" aspect of the piece rather 
than just cramming in features.  That said, I used a lot of them, and 
render times are known to increase exponentially with such applications. 
  I think what I've learned in my art class this semester has really 
helped :)

Focal blur. It takes insane settings to make it look good...

  Or just use a smaller aperture. Overabuse of focal blur is
out of fashion. A smaller aperture and consequently a more
subtle focal blur may give much better results. :)

It is a living scene: i like a lot the "touch and feel" of the floor
expecially.

Everyone loves the GIMP ;-) but there is surely a way to do it using only
POV-ray...

There is, but it would take forever.  It's the focal blur, as was noted 
earlier.  I posted the source, feel free to experiment with it.  Don't 
expect it to render quickly, though.
