Of course this would look much better rendered poster-size where the detail
will be visible.  If I get a good result on the individual pennies, I'll
probably do one that is life-sized (7200 x 10800).

Nice one!  I think the individual pennies need more contrast.. I know it's
cheating to give them more contrast, but it may look better.... or perhaps
if you some how make them more reflective in a contrasty way....

Would like to see a clearer version...

Nice , remainds me of these photo collages. How about an irregular pile
of more or less eroded pennies, which viewed from a certain angle would
reveal the image ....

Try this: suspend the pennies in the same array, but instead of darkening
them, try rotating the ones that represent the darker pixels.

that would make an awesome ZAZZLE poster

Thanks. Originally, I planned to do this using real pennies, but I wanted to
see how it would look first.  I'll have to improve my penny model quite a
bit before it's ready for a poster sized print :) As you can see, the bump
map is terrible.  I'm sure there are resources out there, I just haven't
taken time to clean this one up yet.
