Hi there. Recent events and screw-ups made me want to do this image. It's a
slow WIP as I can't focus properly for long enough to get lots of stuff done
at the moment, but it's a good modelling exercise I can use for my next
short and the current project I'm involved in at the university, a digital
reconstruction of a castle that was destroyed 1763 by the french...

Anyways, this is an early WIP, no colors are final yet, lighting is just
preliminary, lots of stuff still missing... But already renders pretty slow
(though I can't comment on the rendertimes on this version, was playing
World of Warcraft along the way). :-)

Eventually, there'll be something, either abstract/symbolic or very
expressive/symbolic going down the drain. Not sure yet if just one thing, or
a couple of things. But I think I've got a good start.

Regards,
Tim

Looks very good indeed!
I have just been washing up :-) and watched the water going down the drain.
It seemed to me that the drain itself was a little bit more visible during
the process than in your image. Also, the dimple at the side, where the
vortex touches the basin, is much shallower I guess. However, that might be
controlled by the total geometry of basin and vortex, so...

I had just assumed that the deep vortex was representative of stuff going
down the drain a little faster than normal. This could be due to a temporary
increase in pressure from above or because the world just sucks a little
more for a short while.

Chris B.

SNIP some stuff and just keeping the vortex comments from Thomas de Groot
and Chris B:

I'm not quite happy with it either and will have to do some RL-experiments
and spend gallons of water just figuring out how to model it. :-) A little
too broad for my taste as well, though there will have to be some
adjustments just for the visibility of the other stuff going down the drain.

Yeah, world sucks more every day at the moment. :-(

Thanks! I've commented on the vortex in my reply to Chris B, you're
"featured" (recited) there as well. ;-)

That water surface seems somewhat unphysical!
ref pic? http://www.ems.psu.edu/~fraser/Bad/Sink.gif
don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

Just an iddle thought: Would the diameter of the vortex be about the same as
the diameter of the drain? I was (again) washing up this morning, and I had
the impression of some kind of relationship....
Now, where is that engineer who can tell us right or wrong? <grin>

Yeah, that would be useful information. I still haven't tried filling up my
sink and looking at the resulting vortex, though I should do that, I guess.
I'm also working on the artistic perspective of course, and a realistic
vortex might not be useful for that. Depends on what I'll eventually place
going down the drain, I'm still unsure what to model for that.

Tim

I'm not sure what's unphysical to you. The color? That's a common artistic
license to portray water (making it a little blue), but I'm unsure if I'll
keep it, or if the final lighting and such will suffice to show that it's
water. The vortex? That's being debated upon. :-) The refraction? It's set
to the proper value, not much I can about that.

All that aside, I'll try to keep it as realistic as possible whilst getting
to the thought I want to convey. Thanks for your input though.

Tim

It looks very much like the way a toilet bowl draws water down rapidly.

That could be the aforementioned "unphysical" appearance about it, just that
it seems to be pulling the water in much more than the typical sink drain
can do.

That central vortex part is obscuring the drain hole, so you might want to
calm the water some to make it clearer to see. Unless it doesn't matter when
some sort of object is floating above there. Well, then again, I think the
drain hole might be a fundamental part to the picture.

Other than all this I really liked the first look I got of it because the
whole thing actually is a good sink scene. Only suggestion I can add here is
maybe a wetted soap bar with a few little bubbles sitting on it. ;)
