Ok, the composition is suspect and the starry background is very obviously
based on leopard. But this is the first time I've got roughly what I wanted
from scattering media. To get smoother shadows I ended up using "samples
300,1000" in method 3. The shadow contrast, which I was trying to maximise
without overbrightening the background, turned out to be highly dependent
on scattering type and light source position.

Nice media but tell me about artistic license, even in dust clouds, it takes
UA's of depth to get any scattering ;-)

Yeah, but I didn't put a bright nebula in the background! I showed *some*

Scattering in space...
Clearly this ship is damaged - the asymmetric backlight indicates a light 
source close to the hull, perhaps resulting from a damaged reactor or some 
such. I conclude that the vapour cloud is gas etc which has escaped from the 
ship. Otherwise this would be preposterous.

Maybe not. The ship may be in some planetary, probably dusty or foggy, athmosphere,
the apparent 
divergence been due to perspective.
Another option would be for the ship to be REALY huge. In space, you get no reference
point to 
evaluate size and distances.
