Yes, I love this scene too.
One thing that bothers me: in the middle, are there two candles exactly one
behind the other? The flame seems doubled....

Very beautiful!
However, somehow the flames don't look very warm to me. They're missing a
slight glow IMHO. The attached image shows the flames with post-processed
glows, and I think it makes them look more like flames. I'm not sure what
would be the best way to achieve such glows from inside POV-Ray though.

Yes. I found a whole lot of discussion and examples of sub-surface
scattering on these groups and played until I have something that looked
good.

Yes there are. The candle placement is random and I liked the other
placements too much to play any more with the random seed.

Mayba another media. The flames are a sphere with an object pattern density,
so it shouldn't be too hard
to add a second media to the container, much dimmer with a spherical
density.
I'll give it a try and see howe it looks.

btw, how did you do the post-processed glows?

I used Paint Shop Pro 5.
I selected the flames and pasted them onto a new layer. (Selecting the
flames is pretty easy when they're on a black background. Make small
rectangular selections around each flame (use Shift to add to the
selection), then subtract all the black parts from the selection at once by
using the magic wand on the black background while holding down Ctrl.) While
selecting with the magic wand, you may need to experiment with the tolerance
and feather settings.
I applied gaussian blur on the new flames layer and set the layer blend mode
to 'Screen' and adjusted the transparency of the layer. That creates a small
bright glow.
I then copied the flames layer and blurred this new layer even more and made
it more transparent - i.e. to get bigger but more vague glows on top of the
other glows.
That's it.

Beautiful!
Wickless candles?
Foregound candle shows front and back lip with nothing between.

Yup. Someone noticed *grin*. I kept meaning to add wicks, never got round to
it, and no one ever noticed before that there were no wicks (or if they did,
didn't comment, whick is unlikely for my friends)

No, there is stuff between. Candle goes /\----/\ (or kinda like that)
