There is a marked difference between the aspect of the image in the mail
(here it is correctly contrasted) and when viewed (indeed) in PaintShopPro
where it is more washed out. I decreased gamma there to 0.76 and obtained a
satisfying (and similar) tone.

Thank you indeed.
Now, you point to something very puzzling and I was waiting for somebody to
point this out. The fact is that there is no ambient lighting "used" there,
at the left, and I am wondering where it comes from. Not from the rock
texturing (no finish); I had also a shadowless light, then commented it out
because I had the impression that it made things worse. Could there be some
freak reflection? I suppose not, though...

Got it!!

Being used to Moray, where I always set the ambient_light in the
global_settings to 0 (or a very low value), I forgot that in POV the default
of ambient_light is 1 :-(

No puzzle left! I shall provide a better image!!

Thanks for making me think again!

The default for ambient in Pov is 0.1. Still a little too high for my
liking, I usually put
#default {finish {ambient 0.02}} at the top of every file, but certainly not
that high.

Just to avoid confusion, POV-Ray has two values for ambient light: the first
is the global value, specified in global_settings, that is a multiplier for
all ambient light in the scene. This is 1 by default and you might want to
change it if, say, you wanted the scene to have colored ambient lighting.
The second value is per-object and specified in the finish block. The
default for this one is 0.1.

Although all ambient lighting can be turned off with global_settings
{ambient_light 0}, the best way to do this is with #default{finish{ambient
0}} as this can be overriden for a specific object.

I put ambient_light in the general settings to 0.1 in this new scene
version, and added a shadowless light to highlight somewhat the cliff's
shadows. Much better in my opinion.

What do you think?

This is very usefull for radiosity lighting when you want some objects to
emit light and the others not.

Well, thanks for reminding me that the finish ambient default was 0.1. I had
indeed forgotten that too!!
