after some more research, I think I know what's the problem: as someone
already mentioned, the smoke, dust and fire isn't dense enough to make it
look big.  Also the dust-shockwave needs more detail, more structure, and it
should be bigger.

Excessive detail in the background makes it look like a model.
Note that the cloud does not look that way, but the background does.

Try putting the background away at a proper distance, scaling it up 
appropriately, then a little focal blur.

Interesting. The only problem is that if -I- tried it it would still look
like 9500 spheres.... not a very realistic nuclear detonation.

Keep it up - how about trying a fuel-air explosion next?

A lot of the appearance depends on how long it is from detonation.

decrease in temperature because of the accompanying increase in mass. At the

is about 440 feet across, and this increases to a maximum value of about
