Hi all,

Here is the latest avatar of a project I started long ago, but that -
finally - is taking shape. It should illustrate something I intend to write.
The islands are with the Geomorph macro; the palmtrees with POVTree; the sea
is Marc Jacquier's; I built the ship in Moray a few years ago, following the
building instructions from Nicolaes Witsen, mayor of Amsterdam in the
seventeen's century and author of a book on shipbuilding. It took me four
months, a little faster than the real builders (six to nine) ;-)

To do: the wrecked mast. Ropes and canvas; better texture.

Thomas

It's amazing! The composition is very nice, and everything is well done.
I like the slightly tilted camera. If I've to critize something, I would
say that the fog is perhaps a bit too dense.

Oranje boven!!!
I particulary appreciate the dutch ship. Perhaps is the sinking ship a
french one, grateful for Marc?
No, I'm joking, it's a great image. Only something: a tempest with such a
blue sky...

Exceptionally well done. Shows fantastic detail and certainly evokes the
scene.

Wonderful.

Wow, very nice.

In the spirit of offering something constructive ... would it be possible to
move the 'foam' more to the top of the crests? At first I thought it was
somewhat disjointed from the waves, but that does happen in real life. Not
sure exactly what to change, it's far better than anything I've seen lately
but it does seeom to me there should be more white on the crests.

With all that work on the ship it's a shame we can't see it, but the framing
suits this photo perfectly.

Framing something is as important as the modeling (or more so) so perhaps
another image for the detail on the ship. I like the picture very much as
is.

More rope might help, I wasn't adverse to the textures though.

Again, please don't take these comments as complaints, very nice photo as
is.

Thank you Jaime!
yes, the tilt of the camera is often essential for marine scenes. It gives
the impression of being in a boat oneself.
And yes, the fog is not yet what I would like it to be. More work needed.

I am afraid the wreck is also a VOC ship...
Blue sky: this is the aftermath of a storm. You can have (more or less)
these skies with still rough seas.

Thank you indeed, John, your comments are very much appreciated!
Concerning the foam... This is a problem still that I have not solved.
Although the present scene can happen in real life, I agree that there is a
feeling of wrongness about it. I am not sure to be able to solve it (see
thread: Foam over isosurface, in p.b.i. and p.b.s-f)
The ship has a lot of details but would not stand up to close scrutiny. It
works best in the background or the middle foreground. One problem is the
whole set of running ropes that I have not (yet) modelled (the standing
ropes have been though). The ras and sails can be turned to the wind, but I
cannot inbed the splines in CSGs. So, for the time being, they are left out.
At a distance, this does not matter because they would be invisible anyway.
On the wrecked mast, though, more ropes are certainly possible, as well as
some canvas remains....

Hey! that's great!
I don't know exactly why but your image has a painting or quality comics
look. ( the faded colors maybe?)
I'm very proud to see my sea can take part to your work :-)
The only advice I can give is may be the foam is still not quite convincing.
Is it really necessary under this carribean blue sky?

Tot ziens

Marc
