I don't have any reference to compare your image to, but it looks nice to
me. BTW, when you decide to redo your numerals "IIII" shoud be "IV" ;)

Hehe not on clocks, obviously you have no reference :-)
I don't know why, but clocks are an exception, may be to avoid reading
mistakes due to numerals rotation ?

Are you sure? Just looks like blue sky to me.

I never noticed that. I haven't seen any clocks with roman numerals in a
while, the exception being a clock my grandmother gave my family which keeps
the numerals level to the ground, and because of that uses a "IV" instead of
a "IIII."

Although I don't see how you could confuse a IV with a VI, even on such a
watch. IV is the only number that comes between III and V! ;-)

   And not pocket watches either.

     I think it's all down to the light angle.

     Thanks for that! That works well (you can tell it's metallic now
by the reflection in the winebottle) and is much easier than the code
I had.

   It's a bad winebottle then?  ;)

The device at the top for winding the watch

   Heh, I have to admit that I did chicken out of trying to model that
at first and used radial instead, but this morning I summoned up the
courage and gave it a shot - it took some time to figure it out but I
think I got there in the end.

   What do you think of it now?

There is a cactus isosurface in the demo files that may be useful for
the button?

I've rarely seen a IV on watches instead of IIII but this could be a
european thing.

The hands will vary from flat to slightly cylindrical, and a bit
lighter than the example below to very dark blue. I just tried
digi-fotoing a selection of hands but they came out black or white -
I'm no photographer :(

It seems you need at least a little light, or a bright object, near
the hands to see any sort of specular reflection, which may be masked
by the crystal reflections anyway. The example below of a spring used
this:

texture{
   pigment{ rgb <0, 0.5, 1> }
   finish {
       brilliance 4
       diffuse 0.1
       metallic
       specular 0.8
       roughness 0.06
       conserve_energy
       reflection <0, 0.05, 0.1>
   }
}

This is in 3.5 with radiosity, but is much darker without rad, and
also in 3.1

Alf

That makes a huge difference overall
