I love all of these images, they are nice.
Having seen a lot of sun down's at a ski area above the tree line, I'd say
you need a combination of both the red sky and the blue / white snow.
Here's a perfect real life example:
http://www.grandshelters.com/igloo-pics-recent-2.html
for the index
and
http://www.grandshelters.com/images/igloo-night-4-s2.jpg
here's one in daylight that shows the 'rough' area of the snow I was talking
about earlier:
http://www.grandshelters.com/images/denali-4a.jpg
It seems weird that during sunset the snow would be blue, and not red, but
you can see this effect over and over, unless the setting sun is directly
shining on the snow (which it more or less does in your examples).
For example, see:
http://www.backcountryvisions.com/galleries/alaska/denali/pages/3-100.html
and
http://www.backcountryvisions.com/galleries/alaska/denali/pages/3-80.html
and
http://www.backcountryvisions.com/galleries/alaska/southcentral/pages/3-55.h
tml
(although not as much snow).
ON THE OTHER HAND look at this image:
http://www.terraphotography.com/hi/snow_sunset_sm.jpg
This is one where the sun is shining almost directly 'against' the snow and
sure enough, it looks almost like sand.
Maybe snow has some weird reflection property.
After having said all of this, I like ALL of your images.

As well you should be! (despite my making some comments).

I'm sure all those links are meant for Tim more than me :-)
That last one shows a kind of icy ground I was just trying to render a few
days ago using media inside a isosurface. It was only one-hundredth as good
as that photo (bad).
The first link has a picture with nearly the same sunlight and shadow angle
shown on Tim's igloo.
http://www.grandshelters.com/images/igloo-sunset-1-s2.jpg
There's a bit of photography versus reality trouble here though, I think in
person you would percieve a lighter bluer shadow, but only the photography
knows that to be true or false.
The 6th link shows a moody kind of photo which would be nice to render too.
What I like about the Iced Land is how the sky wins out over the landscape.
Like you would rather be flying up and away from there rather than going
into that igloo. I'd worry a interesting landscape would ruin that feeling.
Hey, there's always other scenes to do. Maybe Tim should #declare a finish{}
to this one and move on to variations on the theme or something.

Hi Tim. That image is turning out great! The igloo has a pleasing 'soft'
look to it. Are the clouds media?
This is my first time using the web interface to post to the pov-ray
newsgroups.... I hope it works :)

Thanks to everyone, the comments were very
nice and suprising. The clouds are media, the code
can be found in Iced Land#4 I think (or
was it #3?) in one of my replies.
As for the final version, when I've made the
tweaks (incorporating some of the adjustements
several of you mentioned would fit), I'll make a
last post, which I consider "done".
Thanks all,
Tim

@Tim:
Very nice, well done! Quite an improvement!
@John D. Gwinner:
I've another example. I made this photo last winter.

And you can see more of this on my site:

Exactly - although your post:
>>Someone said before how the snow seems more like desert sand dunes than
desert snow dunes and I can't get that out of my mind still. It's the tinge
of red still in there that does it, <<
is what made me think about it, so it was sort of in response to that.
Sorry for the non-sequitur!

True. The other funny thing is that as it's getting dim, but the sun has
the potential for a lot of glare, the blue looks like it's "glowing".

That's a good point - and that's the evocative part of the scene in fact,
which is why the composition is good.

Nice pictures!
I see why you included them, several of them are good reference points for
our artifical Point of View ...
