It's actually borrowed from functions.inc (f_crackle) with a little
inversing ;-). The shape of the container defines the shape ;-) I could
probably re-write it to allow you to change the crackle pattern like a
pigment/normal/density/.... I'm happy to post source.

so for example was
http://showcase.netins.net/web/patrickd/povray/elginpocket.jpg made witha
cylinder, 2 spheres, and a cone then flattened by scaling the y axis very
small? I might try something like that, thanks for the examples and the idea

Nice! For an old effect on the dial, you might want to add one or
two very thin light blue lines. Quite often an old watch of this style
will have a cracked and/or chipped ceramic dial usually radiating from
the centre.

Here's a good example:

Cool I'll give it a shot. So the dials are ceramic! That'll help me when
I get around to texturing that. :)

Hmm, maybe its my eyes, but I can't find the blue lines.

Note that not all pocket watches have ceramic dials. Some have nice
engine-turned gold or brass dials.

There's only one crack on this dial. It's from the centre to just
before the II (2). The line looks black/dark in this image, but in real
life I've only ever seen blue.

Blimey Patrick, where have you been hiding?

You've got some mean looking watches on your 'site. Bookmarked for
inspiration.

Also note how the 4 is written. This is used on most clock faces, that
use Roman numerals, instead of the normal IV.

As for the hands: just use CSG. That's what I would do - actually have
done: http://home4.inet.tele.dk/ibras/ur.htm

Why don't you try spatch or hamapatch (
http://www.geocities.com/hamapatch )?. They export bicubic patches directly
to povray.
Also you can try transational sweep in Moray, that's the way I managed to
make the clock I have in my site (in the objects section).

For the hands. I would suggest plotting several splines to form an
interesting hand shape and then using sphere_sweep to draw the hand.
sphere_sweep is best suited to this purpose, but you can use cylinders or my
cheap_sweep when possible to speed up render time. Anyway, after you have a
nice curvy hand shape, flatten it and you've got your hand.

For the broken glass. I would use trace against a semi-circle to make
several mesh pieces that will fit together like a puzzle to form your
crystal. You can then manipulate the pieces however you wish.
