its a great program.. i'm using MORAY for scenedesign and textures.. i'm
working on a basic room type image.. i'm getting really grainy/gritty light
sources.. now i know raytracing is notorious for hard shadows.. but i've
seen other peoples examples with smoother shadows than these.. i'm using
some area lights.. what am i missing here
any suggestions would be appricated..
on scene design.. and lighting..
its def. a WIP

It looks good. I know you want smoother shadows and by increasing the number
of lights used in the area light and possibly lowering jitter might help the
graininess, but the grain is very cool on that wall. I like it a lot. It's a
look I've been trying to get in other projects.

I'm not sure what the blue strip is supposed to be. Is it water? It looks like
it's under the gray grid. It's a good composition and the roof area looks very
interesting up there visually. I would like to see more of it by pulling the
camera back, or using a wider angle. I don't know what you plan on putting in
next. Is someone coming up the stairs? For some reason it reminds me of a
level in Oni.

The some of the walls look textured in a way that might be making the shadow
edges more pronounced, but I think Josh is probably right about it just
needing more points to each area light. I don't know what Moray's setting
for that is like, maybe it shows you a 3 x 3 grid by default though. Often
it'll take double that for real good edges.
Hope you give radiosity a try too.

Nice scene.

To make the shadows better, increase the number of lights in the
area_light's. Adaptive area_lights might soften your shadows greatly
without too much of a render-time impact. Not sure about Moray's
support for all of this, but it's just one little section of code, so
you can always edit it manually...

Oh, and turn on antialiasing. :)

Welcome aboard, and that looks like a good start. You might want to try
AntiAliasing, about 0.3 should give you good results, it'll slow the render
down but will be worth it. Looks like your area lights are working fine,
rendering with AA should make the whole thing clearer and smoother.
