Reading about the IRTC in various messages, I tried to find info about it, and 
it seems everyone can just submit an entry - so I decided to enter it. Not 
because I think I have much chances for a place, but what better excuse would 
there be to finish a complete scene with povray during the next weeks? This 
picture is just a very early try, in fact it's just my last scene with a bit 
more flames added. (And it's pure radiosity again, btw.) It will get some dark 
mountains in the background, and I will need a model of a wizard and of a 
dragon..
I mainly post this already so I will more likely continue working on it, and 
because I wanted to ask - what wold be a good way to create realistic looking 
stone columns?

Those flames are a lovely colour, but you may want to vary their shape a
little. IMO the radiosity only approach doesn't suit the subject. You'd be
better off lighting it creatively, as I think it needs really dark shadows,
with highlights on the edges of the stones.
There would be many ways to create stone columns. I believe there are a few
include files that would do a great job (Ken?), or you could use isosurfaces
if you wanted them to look authentically old and weathered (although I
wouldn't know how to do this).

Yes, they are just the flame from another scene with modified color. I plan
on creating different light effects. It seems glows are also a good way to
achieve that, I must try them soon.

I agree completely, but I think I also want to keep the radiosity. In other
images it seems to give much more atmosphere than without it.

Yes, I will need a better approach than my current ones - because I wouldn't
know how to improve them (except maybe putting lots of small object onto
them).
