Well, this is the image I've been working on. I was shocked when I saw
H.E.Day had also decided to go for a flying fortress, though he's gone in a
more sci-fi direction, whereas mines more fantasy. I honestly thought of it
before seeing his :)
As yet I've only really done much work on the distance and the fortress
itself. The ground and the underside of the island are just placeholders for
now. I plan on adding more detail to everything, and I'll probably put
something in the foreground on the left of the image if I get time.
BTW, you might be interested to know the sky colour is done semi-accurately,
it is actually a media effect and the white at the horizon comes about
because you're looking through more atmosphere (rather than from a gradient
pigment). I did this so distant objects faded to blue, like the mountains
and the clouds.
All comments welcome :)

Hey I really like the background, those mountains, clouds, and atmosphere really
look cool. I don't think the ground looks all that great -- if you put in grass
blades rather than a flat pigment I think it'd look a whole lot better. Maybe
putting in a beach as well. As for the fortress, it's off to a nice start, just
a little more detail would do the trick.
Looks great!
Eugene

Nope :) Never heard of it, where's it from?

Yeah, I plan to do some proper grass. I'll also add a town and a couple of
forests. Beaches are an interesting point, I hadn't thought of that. I'll
give it a go.
Thanks!

It needs more textures, and some bumpiness to it, but the base is great. The
mountains need to have some hills surrounding them, especially on the right,
the cutoff seems to abrupt.
Anything on the ground would be an improvement. Keep going with it, it has some
great potential

I don't think so. If the fortress is supposed to be lived in (and not a
toy) you couldn't see individual grass blades from this height. Tiny
trees would be more like it.

I'll see if I can dig up the book or find the author.
Is a good read.

I like it. How did you do the clouds?
Will you be releasing the code for the sky and clouds?
Maybe you should make the rest of the ground have hills so that the contrast
won't be too much with the mountains. Before you add the trees and stuff.
