Presumably, the guy had to drink his whole glass of wine before building
up the courage to ask his girlfriend to marry him, right?
On a technical note, the background texture needs some work, and so does
the candle flame. But an overall neat pic.

I've got many different ideas about the story behind the image. Presumably
she said yes...

Any ideas for the background?

She did not even come, so he could not ask her ... oh, what a chauvinistic
thought. He did not even come, so he could not ask him ... she ... well, you
get what I mean.
I like the mood of this one, but the candle flame needs work.

My interpretation of this scenario would be :
1) She has said no, slammed the ring down on the table and drained her glass
then stormed out, first kicking his chair out from under his legs.
2) He is stunned by all this and is now viewing the scene with his chin
resting on the table.
Perhaps I am being too cynical here !

I like it - it doesn't look like CG, more like a painting (might be the
crappy monitor I am using right now).
To preserver the look, I would not change the candle light nor the
background.
can you post the source ?

I would modify your scenario, thusly:
1) She blurted, "I wouldn't marry an insensitive PIG like you!", slammed
the ring down on the table, picked up her glass and tossed the wine in
his face. She then grabbed her purse and stormed out, kicking his chair
out from under him as she left.

Sounds good to me. Perhaps the scene could do with some modifications to
reflect what actually happened (remember that you and I were in the
restaurant as witnesses):
1) Scene should be slightly out of focus and rose-tinted (to get the effect
of wine in the eyes)
2) A slight dent in the table (you recall the force with which she slammed
it down).
3) A tooth on the table near the ring (from the blow of the chin on the
table).
Of course, it is always possible that the image has been doctored to remove
the evidence above !
