I was trying to emulate the effect some ships in babylon5 have when they
fire their weapons (vorlon, new prototype battlecruisers)

any thoughts?

I don't have cable, I miss that show.

Vorlon ships look cooler than that. I suggest you make an image map using the
fractint plasma fractal, and paste it on the ship. No ideas for the weapon.

I know that =) I was just trying to get the weapon effect down.

I liked the "test" better. Could be because the energy is so frozen since it
would probably be in motion unlike a photo of lightning. I never see B5
anymore and never watched it much anyway but I saw an episode just a couple
days ago with this same special effects taking place a lot.
Anyway my point being I wondered if motion blurring would be feasible for this,
requiring it to have animatable movement first of course.

heh. ok =). i was trying to simulate more "realistic" plasma/lightning
effects...i guess the good ol cylinder beats it all, eh?

same here, the test looks like it has much more 'oomph' (a technical term)

Boom!! <grin>

I also think the test looked better. Maybe somewhere betwen the two,
add a little arcing to the main beam of your test.

Media or textures?

Both versions use media. Ive been playing with Chris Colefax's spline macro
file to smooth out the plasma effect, so far I've gotten pretty nice
results, but everyone seems to think the 1st version looks better. I guess
its the fact that I use 3 media layers on the blue version, while the yellow
versions dont, they just have the central ray and a bunch of "carrier" waves
riding them. Maybe if i added the other layers....
