Very realistic.

I think it's the color. Try something closer to grey, rather than brown.
Look at a real tree to copy.

Possibly.

There will probably be something in this direction in next isowood but i
don't know when.

6 hours.

The colors are from real trees - i don't think it's too saturated
(although a lot of trees are more grayish of course) but bark has some
pretty complicated reflectivity properties and the geometry mostly is
quite tricky as well (often there is a layered structure leading to pretty
flat and shiny 'plateaus' between rougher parts).

Beautiful job. The saturation of the color is what jumped out for me
too. It's not impossible, but it stretches believability.

Yes, bark is usually weathered and smoother on the outside surface, and
darker and rougher in the cracks. I'm still learning POV textures but is it
possible to have a cylindrical or radial gradient? Then you could use a
layered texture & normal map to do the same thing.

Great pic, though!

This kicks ass. Totally.

Andrew.

(BTW, in case it's unclear... that means I like it ;-)

Hi Christoph. Thanks for the fast reply and link to this thread. Although
it's already an older image the only thing that strikes me as odd in this
image is the depth of the rings on top of the stump. I haven't seen this in
real life (not seen is ofcourse not the same as not possible). All stumps
I've seen usually have a flat top (except for the occasionally higher parts
created by multiple chops or near the outer rings, parts where the tree
broke off in the end). But I haven't seen rings with depth yet.

But anyway .. it's way beyond my capabilities for now. I will try making a
plane covered with grass first :)

Best regards,
NumbC
