Just a tip :-)

My experience is that rendering pictures in 16:9 format can add to the
"impact" a picture makes. This can be simply done by changing the camera
object where the aspect ratio is normaly 5/4. Just change it to 16/9 and
change the rendering size to 16:9 or a multiple of that: 160:90,
320:180, 640:360, etc.

Between words: widescreen motion pictures use 2.35:1 I never used it
however. Maybe someone can posts some examples here.

Just for fun, here are some common 16:9 w/h values

 16x9 image formats

 Landscape Portrait

 Width Height Width Height

 160 90 160 284

 320 180 320 569

 512 288 512 910

 640 360 640 1138

 800 450 800 1422

 1024 576 1024 1820

 1280 720 1280 2276

Yep. Actually I think 16:9 is wide, 2.35:1 is "cinema". Or at least in the
Goldeneye video options. :)
The default is actually 4:3, not 5:4.
Other good ratios are tau (~1.618:1), the golden ratio, 2.5:1, panoramic?,
and 4:5.

Gilles Tran has some great renders at 2.5:1,
http://www.mediaport.net/Artichaud/Tran/gtran.en.html
I have a render in tau, a render in 5:4 (vertical 4:5), and the mc escher
gallery is square, http://davidf.faricy.net/raygall.html

I thought the golden ratio was ~1.618:1 ....

Unless I'm not reading the above sentence properly.

Yes it is. I should have made the commas after ratio and panoramic semicolons
probably. Not like they teach this kind of stuff in school anymore. ;-)

I think you mean 4:3, technically speaking 4:3 is considered
widescreen as eary filmaking was done in that ratio. Citizen Kane
was done that way.

Some of my posts are 2.35:1.

If you want an interesting read about Widescreen Cinema, a bloke named John
Belton wrote a book of that name, full of tales of odd film formats with
even odder names - Magnascope, Veriscope, Anamorphoscope, Cinerama,
CinemaScope, CinemaScope 55, Todd-AO, Viventoscope, Polyvision, Grandeur,
Natural Vision, Realife, Imax, Omnimax, Circarama, Ultra Panavision,
VistaVision, Panavision, and WarnerSuperScope (which never got past the
drawing board - which is a shame as it's such a great name!).

And then there's letterboxing, pan-and-scan (or pan-and-scandal), anamorphic
lenses/projection, curved screens...

I feel a headache coming on.

Ok, BUT I have 1 warning:

Whenever I get a raytrace that comes out really well, I like to make it my
wallpaper. It does not work for 16:9 images. well, not 'stretched' anyways.

Here is my std 16:9 Camera. Add it to your Insert Menu.

// std 16:9 Camera (for landscapes)
camera{
  location <0, 0, -10>
  direction 1.5*z
  right 16/9*x
  look_at <0.0, 0.0, 0.0>
}
