I've been working on this landscape for some time now, trying
to get the texture right. I'm shooting for something that looks
like an old Japanese watercolor rather than pure realism. I think
I finally got it.
What do you say?

Great start, you've certainly got the right sort of atmosphere. I think
some ground fog would help to create the effect of aerial perspective that
you are after. I think the colours are too dark, especially at the far
horizon, again ground fog would help. I would stack another HF, or even two
or three, behind the existing one to create an even greater sense of
distance

I agree. I'm experimenting with scattering media as I write this.
I intend to populate some areas with quasi-Edo period dwellings[*], so I
need to keep the fog subtle enough to not obscure them.

Thanks for the tip, Mick. I have several HF's laying around that I've
been
wanting to put to use.
* quasi-Edo period dwelling == my admittedly somewhat ignorant
interpretation
of traditional Japanese structures such as farm houses, etc. :-)

Looks good, but as Mick suggested some more mountains in the distance
would be good. I could also think of some clouds around the tops of the
mountains, especially if there are more in the distance.

Your landscape must be pretty close to the mark. I viewed your image
before reading the text of your post and a Japanese watercolor was the
first thing that occurred to me <s>.

Looks pretty good I think. You have the watercolor look pretty good.
I agree about putting in slight ground fog, but try not to make it look too
much like real mountains.
