Working on a sunrise background for a new scene. The water is just a hack, so
pay no mind. But what do you think about the sky? It's not supposed to be
terribly realistic, I am mainly going for artistic merit here.

Looks good but i somehow wonder about the 'red line' above the sun.  Maybe
some change in the color_map would be good.  

I think it would also look better, if color changes more towards the left
and right. (it's mainly a vertical gradient right now)

This might actually be quite difficult...
You see, there is no colour_map. All the colours are created by a cyan-tinted
scattering media; this media will appear red near the horizon because of greater
thickness and thus greater absorption of cyan/blue light.
Actually there are two scattering medias, one has Raleigh scattering to simulate
air, and the other has Mies scattering to simulate air moisture at lower
altitudes. The latter is also what creates the "red line" or halo around the
sun. There is also a third, absorbing/emitting media to simulate a low-lying
ground fog.
As you can see the whole thing is quite complex, and I've found that even minor
tweaks tend to have a big effect that is rather difficult to control :(
I will work on it some more, though, and probably add some clouds to mask the
regular gradient at the horizon.

You might try replacing the cyan-tinted Rayleigh media with a true
wavelength-dependant Rayleigh media.  The unofficial patch for that is
available at http://www.geocities.com/rengaw03/povray.html.

Well, I've been playing around with that, but can't seem to get satisfying
results. The best I've managed so far is a deep green/yellow horizon, using a
rather high IOR of 2.0 or so (with IOR around 1.1 or so I only get a mostly blue
-> white gradient).
Apparently the documentation is rather scant scant and AFAIK the example scenes
don't create a red sunset/dawn colouration. Perhaps you could give a few tips?

Have you tried changing the max_light parameter in global_settings?  It
really needs to be 10 or higher to keep the horizon from becoming a solid
white band.  Additionally, make sure you have assumed_gamma 1.0.  Try
changing the extinction of the wavelength-dependent media to something other
than 1.0.

And no, I don't have any specific tips for getting a sunset.
