I lied!
I guess at one time or another everyone has done an earth image. Here's
mine. :)

This may be a duplicate reply (or maybe I sent my original reply to your
email address, Mike - Netscape Messenger makes it easy to do that
accidentally), but I notice that the atmosphere scale height seems to be too
high (the atmosphere seems to thick) in these renderings of the earth which
include atmosphere.

Most definitely. It's just artistical license.

Maybe...but I think the problem is more that it seems to be constant
density, instead of fading out with distance. There is a little bit of
fading, but I can't tell if it is from the density or because of the
difference in the amount of atmosphere you see through.

Earth with air you can see anyhow.
A truer atmosphere is abysmal to see so these exaggerated kind are all the
better.
I almost thought you had used multiple lights for the sunshine judging by the
wrap-around then I realized it's an illusion caused by the forward and back
extensions of media shell. If you understand me.

I understand what you mean. That's what makes the unrealitic atmosphere so
obvious. What would be better is a thinner atmosphere with a closer view of the
earth, like a space view horizon shot.
