what i'm trying to do is make several textures that look like these
covering the xwing fuselage.  they look to me to be similar to each
other if not the same, but with varying levels of transparency of the
dirty layer.  my tests have come close, but not perfect.  can anyone
recreate these textures?  for scaling purposes, the largest square
behind the cockpit area is about 0.3 units long.  the dirt seems very
even over each square, and that is what i'm having trouble with.  the
bottom layer should be plain white.  does anyone think there is or
should be a normal applied to this?  how about a finish?  TIA

I'd try this for the dirt layer:

	crackle
		{
		solid
		metric 1
		pigment_map
			{
			[ 0  Clear       ]
			[1/2 RatherDusty ]
			[ 1  Brown       ]
			}
		}

where RatherDusty is brown with transparency varying between 2/5 and
3/5.
