highlights_only}.

That can be done with light_groups. I used them to get highlights in my
image. Have you done any experiments involving reflection in the finish?

Can you post a sample ?

I always thought you can only control how whole objects are affected by the
lights, not the singls aspects of the finish, but it would be nice, if i'm
wrong.  :-)

Reflection has strange results (see post: "Radiosity (Yes, again)" 7/08/00)
on the ground, shadow looks bad (round shape). But it isn't visible on the
objects.

Wish granted. Scenes are in p.b.s.f. (without the skull and the image map for
the second). But the radiosity settings are basically yours, so don't expect to
be surprised...
G.

P.S. I can send the skull (originally courtesy of Ken Tyler) to those who can
manage a 1.4 zip file in their mailbox.

I've done experiments with reflection but they're much better when a light is
involved.
About light_groups, I'm not familiar with them but it's certainly an
interesting solution. My idea, though, was to keep the light from lighting
(sounds stupid I know) so that that I don't have to play with a zillion
settings to get the object right in the cases where radiosity alone does the
job qiuckly and smoothly (as seen in my test images). For instance, I'd love to
do a street scene where the only light would be from a very white, deep cloud
layer. For the time being, though, area lights and light_groups will have to
do.

G.

Basically, this is what I'm doing. The light won't affect the plane, but it
will highlight the ball.

light_source {<1,1,-1>*10 1 groups "walla"}
plane {y,0 pigment {rgb 1} light_group "!walla"}
sphere {y,1 pigment {red 1} finish {phong 1}}

All my work shows splotches (as visible under the shoes).

I don't get it. What is it that you want and don't want the light to do?

This i knew, but it would not work with radiosity in the way Gilles wanted it
(if i understood him right).

It would need some light_group support for the finish-statement like:

finish {
   diffuse 0.6 light_group "!lg1"
   specular 0.3 light_group "lg1"
}
