I like to have little projects on the go, as I never seem to be able to
spend more than a few days on a project - maybe as I get faster this means I
will finish more projects.  Anyways this is my first real use of proper
texturing, ie its used slightly (though still not that much) more subtily
than in others to create at atmosphere.  This may one day be an underground
(london?) station, there are walls but they are all bright red like every
other object was and so hidden.  I think its one of my best yet so I hope
you like it.  Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Getting faster means learning more. As you learn more your scenes will
become more complex. As your scenes become more complex it will take
longer to develop and render them. Sorry but you just can't win :)

Looks like a good start though a tad too dark on my monitor.

Modelling looks good, but i'm not sure about the textures, is it meant to be
metal or stone ?

If i see it right, the stairs on the side are moving stairs while the one in the
middle is fixed.  Usually moving stairs are made of ribbed metal, you could use
a marble/gradient pattern for the normal or an isosurface for that.

The middle step of the staircase is bothering me slightly. I've seen this exact
arrangement at New Street Station in Birmingham where there is a longer step
half-way up, but it doesn't look quite right in your image, it makes the lower
ones look too high up relative to the rail (what's bugging me is that I don't
know how this is dealt with in real life, unless, perhaps the angle of incline
of the steps isn't the same as that of the rail - so that the top an bottom
steps are the same distance from the rail).

Its confusing, I was playing with applying textures and made a stone set of
stairs using a 800*200 greyscale image, which worked out pretty fine (esp
with radiosity for once).  I then decided to make the escalator obviously
out of metal but using the 'muck' texture map using layers so the same image
was used but a metallic finish and filtered black applied over the top to
make it darker - most of this image uses just one image - skill no pure
laziness!  I'm getting fed up with normals, I'm not much good with them and
because they're less apparent I can't stick em in green and red like
pigments for testing which shows up really well.  I wanted that rotated line
ridge to the escalator stairs but couldn't do it, but because after wasting
so much time I've got the stairs referenced I can play with one and all the
others will change for me.  I currently only do moray work - isosurfaces
confuse the hell out of me (and after reading about three tutorials).  So
everything bar the handles and centre stairs should be metal, bit more work
me thinks.

I'd forgotten about that, if you look you would be climbing the centre
stairs with very low hand-rails.  TO give the esaltor look I edged the steps
so that they fade up, but it meant the stairs and escalator were out of
sink - this is the only way I could think of!  I could change the railings
but I went for a simple look (though its far from dam simple almost every
corner is rounded).  I'll have a think but if anyone knows how parallel
stairs and escalators hand-rails work, could you let me know (what a
quastion).  Thanks

Exelent work here Peter.

The textures are fab, but you've missed the metal handrail
on the ordinary set of steps, and some of those metal covered
signs that they have on the central reservations.  

Ths scene seems to be lacking a sense of movement, and I don't
really know how you could get that in here without using people.
