The smoke definitely needs work...more transparence, and more spheres
should help. Maybe also fade_distance, and you will need to increase
max_trace_level.
Also, they should come out of the funnel in an upward jet, not just
trickling out, and it would help if they came from an area, not a single
point, so it looks like the smoke is blowing out of the funnel.

that's right. at the speeds old trains moved, the upward force of the
smoke was enough to have the stream go straight up for a short
distance. in fact, the backward movement of the smoke was mostly only
perceptual. what really happened was the smoke would shoot up, and the
train would move along, leaving a trail behind it. of course, wind had
an effect on smoke travel, but only after the above considerations.

I like the smoke the way it is... Striving to make computer images look
"real" sometimes looses the quality a CGI can achieve... Personally i
like a more cartoon style with more imagination than a photo realistic
",
I do agree the overall path of the smoke could improve w/ a curve up and
extend across w/ a slight rise... Unless it were standing still in the
wind... My first impression ...=)
Where are the tracks...?)

Very nice, but I'd like to know why there were cries for you to use media
in the smoke trail. It's fine as it is (IMO, of course) and wouldn't
have the same semi-cartoon feel if the smoke was media based.
Just my two pennorth.
Bye for now,
Jamie.

You can get this effect with a simple particle system...you don't even
need my particle_system patch, something this simple can easily be coded
in POV-Script. I will be working on an example of this...
