that's right. at the speeds old trains moved, the upward force of the
smoke was enough to have the stream go straight up for a short
distance. in fact, the backward movement of the smoke was mostly only
perceptual. what really happened was the smoke would shoot up, and the
train would move along, leaving a trail behind it. of course, wind had
an effect on smoke travel, but only after the above considerations.
