I finally got around to a small personal project this weekend. Ever since my
wife and I took a vacation to Las Vegas last November, I've wanted to model
a pair of casino dice. They've always intrigued me ever since a friend's
father brought some home from a trip to Vegas years earlier. The fact that
they are so radically different from the kind of dice one finds with say a
game of Monopoly or Yahtzee.

Anyhow, these two dice pretty closely match a pair I picked up when I was
down there, right down to the casino logo. Comments?

There's something odd about them.. but I can't really pin it down. I
think it has to do with the transparency.

Other than that, they look pretty good. Nice attention to detail.

I actually have 8 different sets of dice so far, from several different
casinos. The basic shape, pip placement, number stamping location, logo
location and punch/scratch location (to stop you from using the purchased
dice back at the tables) are all the same between each set of dice. But the
transparency/opacity, colortone, and surface clarity run the gammut. I've
got one pair that are as foggy as red gelatin, and another pair that are as
clear as rubies, with the rest falling all over the map in between.

So, I can understand how the transparency may look "off". <grin> There is no
"right" for it. :{)

Nice. They don't look "radically" different, to me. They just look nicer.
BTW, are you using any refraction?

Well, the last post I sent on this somehow got fubar'd. So, let's try again.

Casino dice are quite different from the typical dice most people use for
board games, etc.. They are constructed to exacting standards to eliminate
any possibility of influencing the roll of the dice. The kind of dice you
typically find in board games, etc.., are rounded cubes with white holes
drilled in to represent the numbers. I've attached an image that shows the
two types of dice side-by-side.

Yea, I used ior. I also used an absorbing media.

I think one of the reasons the board games dice are rounded is so that
they don't bounce around as much when hitting a hard surface. The casino
dice are meant to be rolled on felt to that are cushioned to some degree.

Hmm. Good supposition. Scrambling after dice that've bounced and jounced
onto the floor can be highly irritating. :{)

Since I am supposing anyway another reason might be that since a majoirty
of board games are for kids they wanted to make sure that if the dice were
swallowed the sharp edges wouldn't slice up their innards or get jammed in
thier little throats : )

Nice thought, but I think it's only because its mainly for practical
manufacturing reasons. It's a lot easier (hence cheaper) to pour molten
polyethylene or polypropylene in rounded molds and have it cool evenly
than it is to pressure-mold polycarbonate in highly accurate sharp-edged
molds.

[See Mom, I told you that my mechanical engineering degree would be
useful one day!!!]
