Went for an ambient/sci-fi look. I am going to change the central object for
something different, perhaps add a few wispy clouds. But I'm not sure what else
to do with it. Comments, suggestions?

This is stunning just the way it is. Sometimes I don't realize
when a picture is done and fuss with it till it is ruined. This
one is finished. Perfect.

By all means start changing it, but under a new title after you
save the source for this one in a safe place :-)

Thanks for posting.

I like the terrain... How did you do that?

Come on! This is WAY COOL! I am planning something like this myself, for my
home-burned cd with ... ambient music... heh.

Beautiful composition. It is so much movement in the picture. I really like
the way those ...erm.... stripes point down at the ... erm... city... And
the balance amongst the objects is great. Really good texturing, too. (I'll
never learn that myself, however.)

Maybe a suggestion, if I have to: I believe this image would be really cool,
say in a root-five format. (that is dimensions [n, n/sqrt(5)]). Try it,
maybe it works!

BTW, how did you do the sky?

Simen.

Don't know what it is about this image but it makes me think of music.

It's an isosurface (rendered in megapov 0.4), a combination of several
functions: sphere (the planet), noise3d (dunes), ridged multifractal (ripples)
and crackle (grains of sand).
I'll post the source after I'm done with the scene.

Those stripes are supposed to be rings arount the planet. The city is actually a
forest of silicon 'trees'...

The sky is nothing special, absorbing & emitting media for the sky dome and a
ground fog for the horizon. I used a large sphere for the planet, a slightly
larger sphere for the atmosphere and a disc for the rings.

I'll try the different aspect ratio, kudos for the suggestion.

I really like this. Only thing that came to my mind was the possibility of
focal blur but that would either mess up the rings or the fractal object
depending on which way it were to go.
