Made the transition okay looks like.  Might need a tiny gap under the base to
show it isn't a seamless part of the board under it.  Since the wood seems so
smooth it appears to be lacking a dull reflection.  But if not supposed to be
real smooth then maybe a normal of the same wood pattern could be done to
roughen it up a little.

    Well, if it is smooth polished wood, there should be some reflection,
perhaps blurred reflection. If it is not polished, but rough, (which I
wouldn't suggest) a normal with the same settings as the pigment would be a
start... maybe I don't understand the question...

A Normal in the texture would work, but for an extreme solution (for this
scene) you can use a wood pigment in an isosurface for the plank instead.

It's for a group I belong to that plays (among other games) Jane's 688(I)
submarine simulator.  I have an eagle for those who play MicroProse Falcon,
etc.
