This time I tried to come up with a "force shield" effect. There is
still a bit of grainyness in the areas with edges, I am trying to figure
out a way to have more samples taken in those areas while not wasting
time in smooth areas. In the second image, there are some odd
criss-cross artifacts. I think these are from the method 3, since I have
seen them before with other density patterns. Using a higher media
sample number would probably help.
I am posting the second image in a reply to this post, my newsreader
seems to have trouble with multiple attachments.

I really like this. I wonder if it could be used to do that trick where
the force shield only shows up where a phaser hits it? Maybe multiplied
media patterns with an offset? I will have to get distracted from the
distraction I am on already that keeps me from working on the IRTC...

Nice!
Can the proximity pattern be used for more than just media? I assume so...
If so, could it be used to simulate dirt in crevices, since these locations
could be defined as being a set distance from the other edge? (ie: the line
between two merged spheres)
Rngh... not a good english day for me.

This could have some fabulous applications.
How long did these take to render?
