Hi all,
Here' s my latest image, its created from 99% CSG with 2 small Heightfields,
in Moray.
It is modeled from carefull measurments of the real thing and took nearly as
long to model all the seperate componant parts (Lid, Lower Case, CD-Tray and
spindle thingy) as it did to render.

It took over 4 Days to render in total on a AMD K6 233 due to the complex
clear plastic / glass edges on the lid.

Its intended to be part of a larger and more complex scene i am working on,
but i think i may have to reduce to level of detail on the lid, otherwise i
am not going to see my PC again for weeks!

Rick

Sorry to reply to my own post!, I just noticed that it dosn't like JPEG
compression, even tho i only used 15%. If anyone would like a 800x600 BMP or
other lossles format, please email me and i will send you a copy!

Rick

Does anyone use any other approach for "reality" objects ?

Hi Rick,
Great detail. It just needs the cover insert of a good game sitting
next to it to make it complete (the CD being in the computer just out of
the image of course :-).

Yep, I take photos sometimes from right/left, top and front views and then
use them as references maps. Either that or I do a hand sketch of the
object I want to make in 3D for the right, front and work from there...
mostly for accuracy (or basically anything non-organic) I'll use pure
measurements...

That is very nice. I really dig the little reflections on the upper right
corner of the clear plastic.

This is really superb work, and I very impressed.

I think this is one that should most definitely be posted to the POV objects
library, if you are willing to make the code public.

You may consider adding box objects for the CD cover inserts before you
release it however.

If you don't wish to release it, that is your right or course, but I think
it could be used by many people, in many different desk scenes, if you did.

In fact, JPEG make problems with pure red/green/blue colors; solutions
could be :
- use more "broken" colors
- use a conversion software that allows you to choose a 1-1-1 sampling

About the image, the model in incredibly clever ! I easily imagine that
many
hours of work are needed ! It would be a good idea to put it in the
"pov objects
collection"...

Fabien.

I don't like the repeating patterns in the wood texture you used.

Sorry ! Someone had to have a negative comment for this and it might
as well fall on me this time. It is of course a great job of modelling
on the CD case and one wonders at the effort you expended at recreating
a 2 cent injection molded plastic housing. I guess the next logical step
will be VCR cassettes and then... Just kidding :)

A job well done.
