We don't need no stinking new translucence function in Pov.
We just need smarter artists who can use the tools available
to them as the image below will demonstrate once and for all
time to any who care to look.

And yes I do plan on fixing the flames. This was my first attempt
at converting a halo to media. I have one piece of advice for anyone
who tries to convert halo's to media. Forget it. It is simpler to
start new with media and let those now dead halo's rest in piece
for eternity.

I this made with your mysterious new method? Or is it an ambience gradient?
Or are the two the same?
It's not done with media, I'm pretty sure about that.

I agree! Your image is excellent proof of what you said.

It's almost 100% plagarism is what it really is. If you want to see
the source travel on over to the Pile and look for the candles macro.
It was made for a patched version of Pov that offered macro support but
with very little effort is is usable in v3.1 macros and all. If you
want my modified working version give a yell and it too is yours to
examine or use at your own discretion.

Great job, this looks pretty neat aside from the topic. Look
"translucent" enough to me.

Ken, you have WAY to much spare time.
Now all, come and gather around Kens candles, and hes gonna tell a tell.
A tell of three little candles and how they were done.

/Peter, who really really really gotta get working more in POV.

I like it, but the candles look asthough they are made of sugar.

Steve

PS: very nice flames, especially with the reflections in the
wood. Rotate the wood aswell.

If I rotate the wood the candles will fall over and catch the place on
fire.

Upon further contemplation, I have decided not to continue my efforts with a
media candle. While it's possible, an ambience gradient is much easier and
gives equally good or better results.
I still maintain that media is better with more complex objects - at least
until Lance gets his wish. Even then I could probably show a few situations
where media translucence is the only way to go.
