Hi all,
Its there an easy way to make textures look worn, and grubby.

for example, imagine a scene involving a bathroom sink with taps (white porc
sink, chrome taps) how to i make it look like it hasn't been cleaned it a
long time?

I have tried using a layer texture, to add patches (with a slight bump) but
it looks to random, i want to have sink scum round the base of the taps, and
trailing down into the bowl etc etc.

ie realism!! not that polished raytraced look.

Rick

If you can't find acceptable results with procedural textures and pigments
it's time to explore other options. Image maps are useful but are difficult
to align to far ranging topographies such as a sink would be. This leaves
using objects to fill in the void for realism. You can use flattened out
blobs for a puddle of tooth paste or soap slime. Micro height fields for
that green fungus/scum ring around the drain opening and faucet seals.
Small irregularly scaled spheres make good water drops or unidentifiable
substances on surfaces. Differencing objects out of the sink can make
it look like chips in the enamelled surface. Mixing texture types like green
jade with a chrome metal in a texture map can be used for corroded faucet
finishes.
Adding a few more primitives like this along with carefully designed layered
textures sometimes is all it takes to give it that look of added realism.

Hope this helps give you a couple of ideas anyway.
