Well, Spider mailed me his glass tree, so I played around with it and this
is what I got. The photons from the tree itself are over-focused by
the time they get to the ground (to the point that they diverge and can't
really be seen). The effect from the mirrors looks kind of cool, though.

The second picture is of a blob... somebody mentioned that blobs didn't
work with photons? I beg to differ. This is a modified version of the
blob.pov scene that comes with POV-Ray. I've included the source, since
it is a good example of shooting-density / gather radius relative sizes.

I forgot the stats:
both images rendered at 512x384
computer: p266 96mb (other stuff running in background)

glass tree:
  no AA
  render time 11m 42s
    parse 3m 53s
    trace 7m 49s
  photons shot 435399
  photons stored 120874

blob:
  AA 0.3
  render time 6m 37s
    parse 0m 13s
    trace 6m 24s
  photons shot 56887

That's what I came up with for the tree scene too. I kept trying to get
some sort of focused caustics from the tree. Now I don't feel so bad.

Now I feel 'tupid...
I've tried a lot on that tree, to get something right.. Well, that's what I got
from a bad test.. Next time I'll try and stick to a sphere.
Well, thankyou all for the informations, and yes, the mirrors look really nice.
