Try this...
adjust the angle on the plunger and gun stick, so they both point in
slightly different directions, and turn the head part slight to one side or
the other.
it will make then look a little more real.
the background cavern needs to be lighter, try an off white

Yep, the "Dr Who Technical Manual" was very helpful....

It was supposed to be more of a white. I'll try something else to fix it.

True.

Or the Red ones from the movies (old movies, not the modern Fox one...).

I'll try increasing the ambient. Maybe that'll help.

I'd try a different angle, perhaps a bit of fog...

The image is great! Good use of modelling skill. I think the scene could
use some business in the background. maybe some textures on the walls or
something.

I've thought about putting in a skylight, or making the dome semi-clear,
and using the Galaxy include file. I might try that over the weekend.
I've also thought of adding some assorted control panels...

The modelling is excellent (I seem to recall the bottom part of the
"helmet" having a more vertical slope, but perhaps that changed with
different models of Dalek). Maybe it would help if you made them a
little dirty?

True, they are a bit too clean. Maybe I can make some of them battle scarred...
