Hey Raytracers,

This is an ad for a website I'm working on (nothing there yet). The length of
the ad is limited by the publisher to five seconds. Any suggestions would be
welcome as always!

Nice. :) I recognize some past projects in there! ;)

Are those meshes?

Visually I must admit that I find it a bit distracting.

The "COEXIST" background grabs the attention, while the Roman adage "If you want
peace, prepare for war" fades in and then out - all before the part you want
people to remember progressively appears at the end.

So, I found myself looking all over the screen, translating Latin, and _just_
managing to grab the website before the video ended and YT was queuing up
another selection.

Maybe Do the ole' "I'm gonna tell you what I'm going to tell you, and then tell
you what I just told you" presentation rule. Because people remember what's at
the beginning and end the most, as well as repetition.

So, somehow start out with "PrepareForWar" and then somehow have all the other
stuff decorate that, instead of lead up to it.

Perhaps

PrepareForWar

with a translation fading in above that to yield:

If you want peace,
Prepare For War

 then squish it down to

If you want peace,
PrepareFoWar.net

The colors --- remind me of the French flag. (Also the color scheme I often use
- everything 1/5th of the full rgb values.)
I know the look you're going for, but maybe they could be a _touch_ brighter.

That's the kind of feedback I was hoping for - those are great suggestions Bill!

The ad started out being relatively simple and I just kept adding stuff. You are
100% correct that it's visually distracting but I don't know how to organize it.
Thank you for taking the time to write your ideas. My original plan was for
things to appear from top to bottom. Describing what went through your mind has
helped me identify a big problem. Especially when you mentioned you found
yourself looking all over the screen. Perhaps if you have a moment you can
comment on this - as things appear from the top down everything seems to go more
or less OK (but too fast). But then when the picture at the top fades out and a
new one fades in it causes mental confusion. My brain seems to have the
following reaction when the slideshow starts: "Hey, wait a minute! I'm already
having trouble keeping up with all this fast-moving stuff and now I'm supposed
to re-examine and re-evaluate something I thought I was done with at the top of
the screen and simultaneously follow what's going on at the bottom of the
screen? Forget it!" So unfortunately it looks like the slideshow feature has to
be discarded. But I don't know if that will be enough.

The final version will have a voice (probably mine) speaking the English
translation, "If you want peace, prepare for war... at prepare for war dot net."
I like your idea of having the words "Prepare For War" squish together and maybe
I'll scrap the Latin words in favor of that. If I can figure out how to keep the
Latin phrase though it would be preferable because it will tie in with the theme
of the web site. If I ever get the web site made, that is.

As frustrating as it is, I think being limited to only five seconds is a great
learning exercise because it requires good planning and organization.

The only meshes are the skull and femur bone, which were free downloads which I
converted with PoseRay. The Gadsden snake is a set of prisms and everything else
is my all-time favorite: CSG.

I really appreciate your comments and suggestions Bill!

Dave Blandston

For me, on its own, the ad is too busy. That is too much is going on in
a short time. No sooner has one effect started to end another starts.
I can see it working as a link or playing once and staying on the last
frame.
Playing the video at 25% speed shows off the transitions nicely. I think
the animation deserves at least 10 seconds.

So I think it depends on the use it is to be put to. If it is to grab
the viewer's attention then it works.
That limitation of 5 seconds smells as if there might be a reason hiding
behind it. ;)
Otherwise Bill's comments sound good.

I think you're close, and need minimal rearrangement.

You can pick a single background for COEXIST and not have it change.
Have the full Latin phrase already on-screen.
Have the website somewhere - in small black text at all 4 corners, along the
bottom of COEXIST, wherever. Just have it be there the whole time so when
people scan the screen, it's there.

Have the voice-over simply narrate a translation of the Latin - and have the
translation be your transition to the English text.
Then perhaps enlarge the website text, increase its brightness, emission, or
fade everything else so that the the final visual leaves no opportunity for
distraction.

Now that you have all of the elements, they ought to be somewhat easier to
(re)arrange. I'd pencil-and-paper a lot of this, and maybe come up with 2 or 3
variations for people to choose from.
Speaking from experience:
It's less about what you "like" and more about what works.

Think of all the annoying dancing-baby animations and click-bait crap that ---
apparently work. They suck, but people must click on them for whatever reason,
and that's the point.

The length limitation is imposed on all ads on the particular site I plan to
use, but the site itself is perfect for my purpose because almost 100% of
visitors to that site should be my target audience so I'm motivated to work with
the limitation. My goal is to use the five seconds to implant the address of my
site in the viewer's mind and generate enough interest to encourage him to take
a look. The ad itself will be clickable but by the time someone decides to click
the ad it will be gone! I have to do a really good job of getting my website
name/address across because it has a .net extension. The name I wanted with a
..com extension is held by a domain name investor who wants $40,000 for it. So
I'm glad to hear that you think it grabs the viewer's attention. I just don't
want to lose the attention again by making the ad too busy, like you mentioned.
Thank you for the comments!

Wise words indeed. I'm working on a simplified ad. You guys have convinced me of
what I knew in my heart but didn't want to admit. Thanks again!
