This is a very raw attempt at an animation form one new to POV and Moray.
My version is 35M and a bit large for the group's server! so I compressed
with WinMediaEncoder. I'm not too happy with the slow start and would like
to get it where it would loop smoothly. Any suggestions? Dealing with the
soundtrack makes it more difficult I think.

Looks cool!

As for the suggestion, use a popular video format that can be opened
with something different from Microsoft Media Player. The latter is
really bad at looping (it doesn't prefetch the beginning when it gets
near the end, simple as that, why they haven't fixed it for years is a
mystery).

Try MPEG.

I hunted around for an avi to mpeg utility and was met with a glut of
devices. I tried a couple; one Japanese device (for avi to avi/divx)
crashed a bunch of sw on my machine so after restoring I decided it might be
safest to use a Microsoft product. Perhaps you could suggest a good avi to
mpeg utility for Win2000?
Also, you've jogged my memory a bit. I think the media player will preload
but you have to program an event into the stream using an MS utility...

Michael,
Try Videomach. It's shareware, very simple to use, and in my experience,
trouble-free.

I ran into an old Kaleidoscope at a flea market yesterday. Some suggestions
for your content (not your video format):

1. I think the real think uses three mirrors in an equilateral triangle. My
imagination tells me this would result in six "petals" instead of four.

2. As you roll the tube the pieces fall (randomly, sometimes catching on
other pieces and defying gravity). Any chance of introducing some virtual
gravity in your model?

3. The best implementations used a combination of translucent bits
(sometimes with internal refraction planes) and reflective bits (mirrors,
fake diamonds, coloured foil, etc.). Flashes of light are good.

I intend all of the above only by way of suggestions to improve your already
excellent movie, not as criticism. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the suggestions all of which are quite good.
This kaleidoscope is actually 3 mirrors. It may be the way they are
positioned that makes it appear as 4 petals; I will experiment and see.
Individual rotation of pieces and artificial gravity might be accomplished
with inverse kinematics but I have research to do in this area before I can
implement.

Hello,
here's a avi to mpeg converter that I use,
  http://members.home.net/beyeler/bbmpeg.html
I spent 4 and a half hours finding that last month :-) it twas hard to find.
I think it works quite well, it should work on Win2000,
i've got it running on windows 98.

Gary
