Without wanting to sound picky, I really wish people wouldn't post
quicktime files here since for some reason my system refuses to play
them, and I'm not going to install quicktime after having had it try to
take too much control over my system in the past.

Ah well, never mind, it's been one of those weeks.

Bye for now,
     Jamie.

It has been noted....

It's still a pain, but I found the solution to QT/Borg was not to spend
eternity hunting for file assoc. options in QT, but to get the rightful
applications to reaquire their associations forcefully through their options
and settings.

Well, I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I don't really have too much
of a choice. I have a mac running OS 9 and OS X, and I can't find a
program that will save my files in just plain mpeg format. Quicktime is
the only way I can post animations unless anyone knows of a mac utility
for this. (does anyone?)

I like how you did it, the lighting that is. I don't mind QT too much.
Except... since I only have the free download of it I (always) have to tell
it "Later" when it asks whether to upgrade or not first time it's run. That
and the fact I can't get it to loop is a bother, although I have found how
to get it to play a file immediately at the opening.
Again, I liked the lighting :-)

I'm not blaming you in paticular, it's just that there have been a few
.mov files posted here recently, none of which I've been able to view.

If you've only got QT, then I'm not going to hold you personally
responsible for a shortfall in my ability to view files <grin>

Like i said, it's been one of those weeks, and I wasn't in the most
tolerant of moods when I posted my previous erm, posting (grammar failure
alert!) :)

Bye for now,
     Jamie.

I assume you are trying it with some Microsoft viewer that claims it
supports Quicktime? If so, forget it because they just plain support only
ancient codecs like Cinepak

Umm, no. I think the problem is that if you install QT on WinX it takes over all
file associations - even (and here's the rub) ones it can't actually play. It
also doesn't offer any options for recovering associations. Basically, this one
is down to Apple and QT.

Well, you didn't read the message I responded to:

  ^^^^^^^^^^

- .mov is the file extension of QuickTime file on Windows, and the files
posted were QuickTime. Obviously QuickTime can play QuickTime movies...

As for changing extensions back if you don't like them, on the Win ME system
next door I have no problems changing any file associations manually.

As for QuickTime, I have never seen it take any associations it couldn't
display on Windows 9x or NT 4 (can't talk about any other or the general
problem of three letter file extensions).

PS: Take a look at the crimes committed by M$ (upheld by the appeals court).
One of them is that Microsoft _added code_ to Windows that sabotages
QuickTime and displays a _false_ dialog that QuickTime can't play files it
can actually play :-(

Hmm, well the problem seems to show up mostly in IE - midi files in particular.
However your comment below may explain this... Can you clarify (followups to
O.T.). Still, when all is said and done, I do like programs to ASK before taking
over extensions currently assigned to another program...
