Hi!
I've created a -- with all modesty -- quite beautiful animation of the
classic Pickover attractor as seen in e.g. Fractint. The animations are far
too big to post in binary form here, but they are available from my web
site:
http://folk.uio.no/~simenkva/strange/
The two files differ only in bitrate settings in the DivX;-) encoding
process. There was a wish for better quality anims in the recent thread on
MPEG crashes in WinXP, so here they are... :P
I am working on a C++/Povray combo for creating such animations.
regards,
Simen.

It is quite pretty. Is it made of spheres or is it media or something else?

it's very beautiful, the fainter surfaces have a subtle gossamer feel.
how long did it take to render?

Thanks! :)
It took about 60 minutes, I think.

Actually, it's none of the above. I've written a simple renderer in C++, but
I am working on implementing in it POV --- probably as a patch --- adding a
media type or something similar.
Each frame renders about 10 million tiny points on an attractor. These
points are considered as infinitesimally small spheres. Right now, I am just
projecting the points on the screen without keeping the information
calculated in the 3D point. This means that realistic shading, shadowing
and so on is impossible to achieve. (In this animation the cloud acts as
emitting media.) However, I have created an algorithm to overcome this.
The memory requirements are quite frightening: I want to calculate _at
least_ 10 million points, requiring _at least_ 240 MB for storage. The
rendering, however, should be quite quick.
regards,
Simen Kvaal.

Hi Simen,
Can't see it, my media player says : "Unregistred Class", do i have to
download a codec, if so : which one ?
I'm a Pickover fan (I'm proud to say that one of my photos is in the Pattern
Book), and can't wait to see it

Use DivX;-) 5. Available from divx.com for free. Download the bundle, but
don't care about the pro-version. Lots of spyware there...
