I've been meaning to post this here for ages. This is an early test-render for
the smoke I used in my Meteor entry to the Force Of Nature round. In many ways I
think it looks even better than the smoke in the final animation.
The cool thing is, this only took 7 minutes 25 seconds to render!
The reason it's so "cheap" is that I've cheated! :) The smoke consists of lots
of discs turned to face the camera. Each disc fades to transparent at the edge,
and has a normal to make it look spherical. There's only 300 particles in the
animation. There's also a couple of bugs that I fixed in the final animation,
but I still like it.
Anyone want source?

Ahem, yes... Well I'm afraid I don't have the source to it any more! I thought I
had an mpeg version of the animation lying around somewhere, but it seems not...
However I have found a later version of the effect, and after some tampering
I've managed to render a similar animation. It doesn't look quite as nice 'cause
the lighting is set up differently.
This one took 9 minutes 6 seconds on my P3 550MHz, whereas the other one took 7
minutes 25 secs on a P4 2Ghz!

Doh! Of course the reason the 2Gig PC took nearly as long is that there's 2x
more frames in the first animation... It's too late at night...

Whats your max trace level at? Is it just me or are there some black spots
here and there real quick?
And did you consider trying actual clipped hemispheres instead of discs with
normals?

Max trace was only 8. Though I think the black spots are mostly caused by
something else. The version used in the irtc entry didn't suffer from that
problem so badly.
The fade at the edge wouldn't work with hemispheres, it wouldn't give the
illusion of being completely soft.

Excellent trick! Works like a charm. In this case at least.
Mind if I borrow it?

Whooo. Smoky.
There was a cool anim of a tornado in irtc, but it looked like a cylinder of
sandpaper.
