It does have some effect on more complex items, such as hollow objects with
glass objects inside, doesn't it?

If there are no surfaces or media for the photons to show up on, they
will only slow things down. They behave like any other illumination.
Glass usually won't show them, and most metals will only have a slight
visible effect. If you entire scene is a complex object composed of
highly reflective metal and completely transparent glass, you will just
drive up your render time.
However, if you put that object in a box or on a plane with a mostly
non-reflective, opaque texture, or use media...

I have no probs with DivX :) But most people don't have the codec installed

Ah, okay. Using it on timber, smoke, etc?

As far as I can tell, there is no Mac codec for it, which means I can't
play any DivX-encoded movies. There *is* a player for it...but it
requires the Mac version of Microsoft Media Player...bleh.

Guess I'll have to post links in future. One to an AVI and one to a GIF

If the timber has any reflective qualities, the photons will reflect off it
on to other objects. Also, for example, if you have a shiny metal ring
sitting on a timber surface, you'll get photons shining off the metal on to
the timber surface.

Try compressing it with MPEG, that way everyone will be able to view it as
there are lots of players for many different platforms.

You might consider using a utility like AVI2MPG if you want to keep an AVI
copy, without having to render to Targas.

Or just do a batch conversion of the bmps
