I have rehashed an old string system I had written ages ago, and here is a render
of stiff wire. I think I made the wire too stiff, but see what you think. Anim
inspired by Mark Hanford's robot hand (see p.b.i )

Well, you've used spheres and mapped the textures on them, right?

It does look better, but if you look closely at the shadows,
you'll notice that there are "jumps": suddenly a spherical
shadow disappears as the object (already totally
transparent at the time) is taken out of the scene.

I know this kind of problem, I had it too sometimes.
Perhaps your spheres don't end up 100% transparent,
due to the image-map (as I think it is) you're using?

As suggested on the first animation, I think adding some
twisting and swirling would look a lot better, but as
also mentioned, using image-maps and not real 3D clouds
makes that impossible...

it looks to stiff in some parts, and to quick to bend in others

otherwise great :)

When I fix some problems with the system (which could be some time), I'll post
the source.

are you referring to the speed at which the loop forms? I think I made the spring
constants too large, and this quick loop formation was a result of relief of
quite a bit of strain.

Thanks!

My exact same thoughts. :)

Not just the forming of the loop, but all four motions: looping, bending
down, unlooping, bending up. It's like almost nothing happens between these
things, and then suddenly all the stress is relieved at once instead of
smoothly and gradually. But nice nonetheless!

Thank you. For a prelimimary, I was satisfied. Now it's time for those long hours
tweaking one or two numbers to get the "perfect" result...
