You want me to post an MPEG? It's probably 3 times as big.

I have always found it to be exactly the opposite. Or at least
potentially the opposite, because I can take a 3 meg AVI and scrunch it into
a 1 meg MPEG, even smaller if I am willing to bear the loss.

    Ah... well... I haven't made a DivX;-) AVI so I shouldn't talk. I was
talking about regular AVIs like Fast Movie Processor makes. I don't even
know what type that is, but I have converted all my AVIs over to MPEG and
got 2:1 or 3:1 reduction.

divx is pretty good, but if bink and smacker didn't have that stupid ad
at the end of every video, i'd prefer that instead. they say it's
better than dvd and they few vids i've seen look incredible.

I've been trying it out and a file that is 2500 in my regular avi format
is about 550 in divx, but only about 620 in a similar quality mpeg. Still
have some testing to do, and my eye for quality is not what some people's
might be, but so far I don't see that a few percent reduction in file size
is worth making other people find and download yet another file just to see
my animation. MPEG is a pretty fair standard right now, although I am
curious about mayo...

i know, but i have never never had any success in making a mpeg from an avi
(or anything else), so divx provided me with a simple way of getting a
similar result easily

there needs to be an online povray groups FAQ i think, where such
information could be published etc
