Hi,
is there any hope to get the unix version of povray-3.5-beta or
better yet the first release any time soon ? I would like to
framiliarize myself with some of the new functions to update my programs
that generate input for povray. I may be the exception but I live in a
virtually PC and Mac free environment - only recently when I was on
vacation I had access to a pc and installed the beta version of
povray3.5 which I found to be quite nice after several hours struggle to
understand the documentation about mesh2 - but I digress.
In short: I would like to get a unix version beta or non-beta. How long
will I have to wait roughly ?
Thanks,

     Lothar.

I can tell you that it is actively being addressed by the POV-Team but
there is no release date available at this time. I would -guess- within
a month, maybe less, but caution you this is only a guess.

A release won't be available until after the beta rounds are over.
That's normal.

The Unix folk among those with access to the source code repository
are actively working on it, this I can assure you. Whether a generic
Unix source distribution of the betas will be available is heavily
under question and I seriously doubt it. Maybe a binary will be
available for Linux (and maybe Solaris) but these are just maybes that
come from me and not the Team nor TAG.

So for now, keep your fingers crossed, hold your breath and if you
have Wine, try installing POV under Wine. While not officially
supported by the Team, I'm sure it'll be interesting to see how well
it behaves. You're not the only one with barely any Windows access...

A beta-release of binaries only might be possible (although I don't know
anything for sure).

Never questioned that people are working on it. I guess I am just a bit
anxious to get my hands on it. Sorry. BTW why Linux or Solaris binaries
if at all ? What about good old Irix and OSF ???
Oh well I guess I just have to wait.

Availability. That is to say, I have a Linux machine on which to build and
test such binaries, so those are the binaries that will be available. Until
the beta period is over, we won't be releasing source code (due to the
unfortunate actions of a few misguided people during the 3.0 beta, if I
recall correctly.) One of the TAG members (Warp) may be able to build and
test Solaris binaries, though nobody's asked him yet and I don't presume to
speak for him (or anyone else.)

My computer dual-boots into Windows 2000, so while I don't have massive
withdrawl symptoms, rebooting is a pain. I therefore tried running POV
3.5 beta2 under Wine. Essentially, it starts up, gives a few errors, then
shows the full GUI -- with the messages pane completely blank. All of the
menus and buttons look functional, but attempting to load or render a file
causes it to hang.
Anyways, that's all I got it to do. Hope others are more successful
than I.

	I have a Sun/Solaris box! Maybe I can grab a binary and
try to run it... I'm also lookin for an HP-UX box...

This is no problem to me. I can post the Solaris binary somewhere.
  Is it ok?

On the other hand, I can't post a pure beta7 because some things have
changed since then (it would be a kind of beta 7 and a half), but I don't
think that's a big sin.
(I have also fixed a couple of things myself, eg. the PNG gamma correction
problem, but I can revert to the original version easily. I think I shouldn't
be distributing a version hacked by me.)

If you fixed some bugs, why not? I think you shouldn't be distributing a
version with known bugs which could have been already fixed.
