I've 3 computers and 5 CPU's (see www.fa2.de) so I was unhappy with the fact
that POV 3.5 on some pictures really took long time (even on my DUAL Athlon
2000 MP) while a lot of POWER was unused.

I've just developed a system to distribute a Rendering on MANY PC's and also
to use as many CPU's on each of the machines.

Anyone intrested as a beta-tester ?

Mail me pls. and tell me about your qualifications.

Thanks

I have 15 PCs in a lab at my university, all connected via Ethernet and
identified via a Windows workgroup under Win 98. What are the basic
requirements, hard and soft, for your system?

Sounds really good.

I'll try to explain the program more nearly.

1. On the "Control-PC" is running a "distribution-program" name "smpov.exe".
It does not need an installation however it is not tested under any OS otehr
then W2k - so you can do that.

2. When this program starts first time, it makes a subfolder just at its
current place. The name of the folder is "COM" (like communication).

3. You need to make this folder a "shared folder" (network). Then ANY of the
client PC's need to get a mapped network drive on THIS Shared folder (COM)..

4. On the Client PC there has to be a full installed version of POV-RAY 3.5.

5. You start on the client PC the "Renderagent.exe" (currently 25 kb)
however it should not need any installation. It will ask you at the first
run for your COM-Folder. So you should have mapped the COM-Folder (step3)
already to a Driveletter.

6. Tell him where his COM-Folder is (the same Folder for ALL Agents and for
the Main Program !).
As you see, he has only 4 Checkboxes. Each one will start a separate
rendering process if you enable it.

7. Then there is a third Program which must be in the same folder as where
(ever) you put "smpov.exe".
Its written in VB and so it needs some Runtimes, however I cannot tell
you if you have them or not.
Just start it after downloading and you'll see. If you have some
VB-Programms installed
(Picturebox-Control) it should be avaiable. If you have trouble, you may
need a "Blind-Installation"
from me (just to install the picbox-control). Try it and report it to
me pls.

8. This program, name is "PicPend.exe (Size is 12 kb) concatenates the
pic-tiles to the big picture after they
are rendered. It has just to be there, you have nothing else to do
manually with it.

9. Now you can start the main Program (SMPOV.exe) and click the parameters
for the first picture
    (resolution, number of tiles etc.).

10. Now drag'n drop some POV-Files into the SMPOV.exe Window.

11. Now wait till you get the pictures. After you rendered something there
is a file "times-log.txt". It shows you the times for the Full rendering (
all tiles + concat).

12. One limitation: Please note that the Client-PC's do not have access to
additional include files on the master PC. they have only their own
includes. So if your source POV-File is made up of more then ONE file, first
put the second file into the COM-Folder manually. Otherwise the Clients
cannot reach it.

Lastly. The next version is nearby, so make some test runs only and come
back to get the real thing.

PS: this version only tiles ONE pic into 8 tiles but wait for the next
version ...
