I am wondering about adc_bailout and how it affects the 16-bit image
output. Do I have to change or disable this feature from the global_settings
block or are the default settings adequate for 16-bit output?

I think that the default value for adc_bailout is 1/256, so technically you
are right: If you want to get the whole accuracy of a 16-bits-per-channel
image, you should change it to 1/65536.

I wonder if POV-Ray should change this automatically if a 16bpc image is
used...
