Using the traditional POV 3.1g - how do I make soft shadows? Should I
simply use an area light instead of a point light?

That's what the area_light is for.

Yes. For best results make sure that the plane of the area light is
perpenticular to the line connecting the location of the light to the
look_at of the camera. This is most easily done by first making the
area light lie in a plane parallel to one of the coordinate planes and
then rotate it into place.

I think that the only reason why there's an area light is for making
soft shadows.
I don't know of any other use of it.
