Height fields with a large scale or by making them with a triangle
mesh. It is not easy even for advanced users of the program and I
cannot offer much more than that.

Or maybe you could try the Superpatch, a bit along the lines of what Gilles
Tran did in some of his images like Tileable.

Yes. Displacement mapping on a plane is what I would do. Preferably using a
pigment like granite.

A solution is to create a bumb-map with sinusoidal waves, then add small
amounts of turbulence.

SETTLE DOWN!  Sheesh...

Superpatch is a rather large patch created by Ron and it has a lot of
functions like "custom objects" which can be made by formulas etc etc.

I'm sure the Link Master will be able to get you a link to where it can be
downloaded.  :)
