Height fields with a large scale or by making them with a triangle
mesh. It is not easy even for advanced users of the program and I
cannot offer much more than that.

Or maybe you could try the Superpatch, a bit along the lines of what Gilles
Tran did in some of his images like Tileable.

?

Yes. Displacement mapping on a plane is what I would do. Preferably using a
pigment like granite.

A solution is to create a bumb-map with sinusoidal waves, then add small
amounts of turbulence.

Simen.

He didn't want to use a texture.

SETTLE DOWN!  Sheesh...

Superpatch is a rather large patch created by Ron and it has a lot of
functions like "custom objects" which can be made by formulas etc etc.

I'm sure the Link Master will be able to get you a link to where it can be
downloaded.  :)

Is there some reason you haven't read the other dozen responses where
someone has answered this question for you?

But Ken, I'm talking about places where HE SPECIFICALLY asked the
question and it was answered. Yes, other people ask all the time,
and I don't mind typing in my URL each time [1] but I expect them to
care enough to read the responses to their questions. If he doesn't
care that much, why does he keep asking?

[1] Yes, typing. My fingers have it memorized so cut & paste is actually
slower.

And a way to make it work in the Superpatch is to try something like:

function{
        (y-sin(x)-cos(z))
    threshhold 0
    bounded_by{sphere {0,10}}
    pigment {Green}
}

This might work..........
